Unii cercetători au studiat problema bârfei prezentând unor subiecți deprimați și unor subiecți nedeprimați, personaje celebre, cerându-le să emită judecăți despre ei.
Studiul a relevant tendința participanților de a devaloriza celebritățile asupra dimensiunilor unde aceștia se simțeau „în concurență” cu ele. De exemplu, femeile care se considerau atrăgătoare aveau tendința să spună despre un top-model ”Nu-i chiar așa de grozavă!”. Bărbații care se considerau inteligenți aveau tendința să afirme:„Nu spune numai lucruri geniale”.
Evaluând dispoziția unei persoane înainte și după exercițiu, cercetătorii au mai observant că o astfel de critică nu le făcea bine decât persoanelor din lotul depresiv. Ceilalți vedeau mai ales că dispoziția lor se posomorăște. Oare din cauza faptului că bârfa îi alină, cel puțin pentru scurt timp, o serie de depresivi netratați sunt adesea morocănoși? Atenție, totuși, dacă sunteți într-o stare depresivă, nu vă va face niciun bine să bârfiți!
